ELEVENTH CENTURY CASTLES IN SOBRARBE THROUGH MEDIEVAL TEXTS AND VESTIGES

Resumen

Partiendo de las menciones de fortificaciones en las fuentes escritas medievales, este artículo analiza el uso por los escribas de las palabras castrum, castellum o turris y el significado de estos términos. dadas las escasas ocurrencias y la imprecisión de los ma- nuscritos, los vestigios de los castillos del siglo XI nos aportan mucha más información sobre la arquitectura militar aragonesa naciente. Este artículo añade datos útiles para el mejor conocimiento de la organización general de los castillos sobrarbenses, así como precisiones sobre las originales aspilleras inclinadas, aspilleras que han sido muy poco estudiadas.

Abstract : from the mentions of fortifications in medieval written sources, the article gives an update on the use by scribes of the terms castrum, castellum and turris, and of the meaning covered by these words. due to the small number of occurrences and the inaccuracy of the sources, the most valuable knowledge of the nascent aragonese medieval military architecture is provided by the vestiges of fortifications that can be dated back to the 11th century.

the article gives additional informa- tion about the general organisation of  Sobrarbe castles, as well as further details about some unusual sloping arrow loopholes that have seldom been stu- died so far.
