Excessive and compulsive working have been characterized as a key aspect of work addiction. Postgraduate professors with master's and doctoral degrees are susceptible to work addiction, a significant psychosocial issue. The goal of this research was to find out how common workaholism is and to examine how sociodemographic factors, job-related factors, and psychosocial issues influence its two main aspects (working too much and feeling compelled to work) among 302 university professors in Brazil. We employed the sociodemographic and work-related questionnaires, Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS), and the Copenhague Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ-II) as research instruments. The results indicated a prevalence of workaholism of 15.6% in the sample. The excessive work dimension was predicted by higher work commitment, higher work demands (quantitative, cognitive, and emotional), and higher remuneration. In addition, being a woman and having less experience as a university professor were also predictors of higher excessive work scores. The compulsive work dimension was predicted by higher work demands (quantitative and emotional), higher work commitment and remuneration, and by younger age and level of freedom. The findings suggest that both personal and organizational steps are necessary for prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.
