“Smiles and tears”: constraints, supports and attachment styles in the visibilisation of gays and lesbians

Public acceptance of homosexuality remains a contentious issue, characterised by both subtle and overt negative attitudes. The process of coming out as gay or lesbian is often fraught with difficulties, given the social presupposition of heterosexuality for both men and women. A positive family environment, characterised by strong emotional bonds, serves as a stabilising factor, thereby facilitating a positive visibility. The present research sought to identify the elements of support and limitations in the visibilisation of cisgender gay and lesbian adults in Catalonia (Spain), and to classify their attachment styles. A quantitative study was conducted, in which 241 gay men (n=121) and lesbian women (n=120) participated. An ad hoc survey and the CaMir-R adult attachment questionnaire were used as instruments. The results indicate that visibilisation is a complex process, with enablers grouped into two themes (relationships and emotional support) and constraints organised into three (diversity and relationships, identity and social perception, discrimination and adversity, and lack of support). The most prevalent secure attachment style (59.3%) was identified, followed by preoccupied (26.1%) and avoidant (14.5%). Insecure attachments are characterised by significant difficulties, while secure attachments are marked by significant support. In conclusion, understanding the experiences of gay men and lesbians should encourage the promotion of protective factors, such as supportive family and social relationships, that foster a positive coming-out process.
