La novela de Salman Rushdie Midnight's Children «trabaja» conscientemente con las convenciones utilizadas por los escritores de autobiografías de ficción del siglo XVIII, como Defoe, dándoles nueva vida y una función paródica. El intento de socavar una visión coherente y estable del yo y de la sociedad es paralelo al intento de minar las convenciones en las que se basan las obras literarias pertenecientes a esa cultura. De este modo, Rushdie ha demostrado magníficamente cómo la pesada carga de la tradición puede utilizarse en beneficio del propio escritor.
